Love Is...

This is a re-post from last year's Valentine's post.  It is one of my favorites and worth a second glance :-)

I have decided to make a St. Valentine's Day post a few days early.  Today is the 15th anniversary of my Mom's death and the day before Ash Wednesday.  Each year this time of year reminds me of the important things I have been blessed with in my life.  I am now at a point in life where I can think of my Mom today with more thoughts of happiness, thankfulness and joy than of sadness.  I am a better person {and mother} because of her and for that I am thankful.

I have decided that this month I am going to memorize 1 Corinthians 13:1-13.

I've always loved that particular scripture and it was part of our wedding too.

This is why I like it best...

Love is patient and kind;

love is not jealous or boastful;

 it is not arrogant or rude.

Love does not insist on its own way;
it is not irritable or resentful;

 it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right.

Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

  Love never ends.

Celebrating My Mom

Yesterday was the 16th anniversary of my Mom's death.
It’s hard to believe that it’s been 16 years since my Mom went to be with Jesus. I’ve decided to celebrate her life instead of mourning my loss. She was an incredibly strong woman who persevered during many adversities in her life. The more I look at myself, the more I see her traits, the good and not so good within me. She was a kind, sweet caring person who always put people before things, could bake the most delicious homemade bread from scratch and read a 300 page novel in less than two days!

 Some of the sweetest memories I have of her are baking in the kitchen together when I was little, the many, many long walks we took down Main Street growing up {mom didn’t drive}, her dressing up taking me trick or treating as a child, and walking me to school and attending Mass each day during elementary school {doubly blessed if it were a feast day as I attended Catholic school}.

She was kind, loved God and all the people who she was blessed to know and although her life was not always the way it appeared to me and there were many times of struggle, she always placed her faith in God to carry her through and He did.
Thank you SO much, Mom, for helping to make me the person I am today!

The Weekend in Review

We had such a fun weekend! It was jammed packed with non stop action, mostly outside (YAY!) due to great weather.

There was the Testosterone Zone.
  I am the queen in my house of blue and boys will be boys and we had LOTS of boys {and one lone girl} hanging out and playing.  We usually have lots of kids over, but, this summer our little group seems to have grown. A good amount of the pictures I took came out blurry and you can't tell, but, we had ten boys here riding bikes.  It was pretty entertaining!

We had a birthday party for Lovey Dovey's Webkinz.  They all turned TWO on Saturday.  I thought it was very sweet of them to all celebrate their birthday on the same day!

Here is Lovey Dovey making his GF, EF, DF, NF chocolate cake for them bright and early Saturday morning.  This cake is amazing and it is probably one of the best I have
come across!

{notice that Lovey Dovey could not wait until their party to have some cake!}

We even had some basketball to round off the weekend nicely.

I hope you enjoyed your weekend with your family as much as I did mine!

My Dinner Date

Five years ago, Handsome got himself all dressed up and asked me to a special dinner.
We had a nice dinner at home with candles and yummy food and made it all grown-up like!  His dad was away on business and he wanted to do something sweet for his momma.

Here is a picture of him before we had our date.

He is 11 years old now, but, still I get sweet surprises and had one waiting for me one my bed yesterday.

{Apple added just in case he is peeking. I don't want him to see where we are going!}

Now I know you don't know Handsome, but, his signature style with cards is to always draw a chocolate chip cookie on the back.  He's been doing it for years!

This little sweet act of kindness just made my momma heart melt!

So, tonight I am headed out for a sweet dinner with my first born grown up boy!
I cannot wait!

Revisiting Childhood While Being the Parent

Raising children is a two way education...we teach our children how to prepare for life, while they teach us what life is really about.

When I was a child, I was not the smartest girl in my class, I was hardly the most athletic, not the best singer in chorus, but, I was somewhat artistic early on.  Actually when I was six, my chalk drawing was honored by being displayed in the Superintendent's office for a whole month!  Big deal for this six year old :-) That talent never did go any further, but, to this day I would love to learn more about art!

When we are small the world is ours for the taking.  Anything and everything is a possibility to a wide eyed and excited child.  Many days while we are homeschooling my boys make their way off on numerous rabbit trails into unexplored and usually very interesting territory that I had no intention of covering for that day.  Those are usually the *best* days we have.  You know, those unplanned, fun-filled anything goes kind of day!

"Every beetle is a gazelle in the eyes of its mother."
~Moorish Proverb

I try my best to encourage those types of days...filled with love and laughter and excitement to explore the world.  Childhood is much too short these days and a child's enthusiasm is often squelched by an off hand comment from a parent, a teasing friend or sibling or a well meaning, albeit all too critical teacher!

A few years ago my boys decided they wanted to be in Christmas choir.  My oldest was SO excited about it and learned all of the songs, word for word by heart.  At the age of nine he had a very difficult time keeping his singing in the right tune and not being flat. I worked with him quite a bit, but, he was flat as flat can be.  Although his sound was not quite up to par, his enthusiasm and love for the singing and for baby Jesus, well made up for any funny sounds that may have come from his mouth that year {and the following}.  I am proud to say that on the third year of choir his sweet little voice blossomed and he sang a beautiful solo of "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" that made me so proud.

"Men are what their mothers made them."
~Ralph Waldo Emerson

My boys go out there everyday confronting new challenges as they explore the world around them and how to fit in and make their way about God's great creation.  Many times I know that as parents we tend to get lulled into a comfort zone that alot of times it is hard to find our way out of.  I find myself many days just tired at the thought of all there is to do on a normal day, make meals for many different people, try to keep the clutter at bay while cleaning the clothes, dishes and floors...never mind the *thought* of stepping out of my box to *try* something new!

 "Every child comes with the message that God is not yet discouraged of man."
 ~Rabindranath Tagore

This is where these little blessings come in...
They encourage me with love and laughter to just *try* something I most likely would have never dreamed of doing if I was not someone's Mom.
These days I find myself dancing around the kitchen with little people while making dinner, playing pirates snuggled up under the covers, making the coolest forts out of sofa cushions, having picnics on the living room floor on red checkered tablecloths and starting art lessons with them as well.  I sing and dance like the carefree little girl years gone by and love it when it happens.  Nobody chooses me close to last being on their sports teams {I'm tall and that counts when you are playing with kids!} Nobody criticizes the way I sing, dance, paint or attempt to play the piano.  They love, admire and encourage me...just the same way that I *try* to love, admire and encourage them.

My oldest has been taking piano lessons for four years now and really wanted to teach me how to play the piano when he first began to play.  I must admit to not encouraging his talent as much as I should have.  He is a gifted pianist and the first year was a dream!  All he wanted to do was play the piano every day.  As time went by, he had new things that were exciting to him and the piano became more something that we required him to do and when he did he is amazing.  If I had persisted early on he would be further than he is now, but, of course parenting is on the job training and I am trying more now to be consistent with his diligence in this area.  I have decided that this fall I am going to join him and my other two sons taking piano lessons.  I have always wanted to, but, never did since it would take up more time that I usually just don't have.  I am really excited about it and  just the idea of learning the piano in my 40's is wonderful :-)  Hopefully we will inspire each other.  Again this is something I would have never dreamed of doing if I was not someone's Momma.

The Ten Things That Homeschooling Has Taught Me

Mary @ Home grown learners has a wonderful post on how homeschooling has changed her life that inspired me to create a similar list, but, mine is more what *I* have learned over the past six years of homeschooling my boys.  It is a top ten list of sorts ;)

1.  Slow and steady wins the race

   I remember when I first began homeschooling my oldest son.  I had small and narrow     goals for us that year.  We worked on the necessities {or what I thought they were at   the time}...The 3 R's, art, science, and having fun!  I was thinking strictly in the box and ordered a packaged curriculum that year and even registered with them and had records and the whole kit and kaboodle!  It was a lot of paperwork for Kindergarten and we did not repeat that again for anyone else.  Over the past six years my hopes and dreams for my sons have enormously expanded and I see now the blessing and beauty of homeschooling.  It is an ongoing 24/7, 365 days a year learning experience and truth be told, my sons have learned the most important lessons in life from the little moments that were spontaneous and unplanned!

2.  Keep your eyes on your own paper

I need to confess that over the past six years, I have shuffled things up a bit more than need be.  I try to read a few {not too many} blogs of the ones listed here, occasionally at best.  I have seen some wonderful ideas from many talented mommas out there and thought to myself that it would be great for our family too, but, that was not always the case.  I have found some really amazing things for us to utilize in our homeschool from others, but, one click on the internet usually turns into way more than that one click in the long run and after many minutes, usually trying to reinvent the wheel is a colossal waste of time!  Time wasted that could be better used on other things, like enjoying time with my family :-)

3.  Invite the Holy Spirit into your school each and every day.
I have found that the best days we have I leave time free in our schedule to be open to His guidance.

4.  Patience is a virtue

Although you may plan to spend a certain amount of time on something, life seldom goes as planned ;)  This especially applies to math!  You can almost see those little wheels turning inside their heads some days and you really, really, really just want to blurt out the answer that they are struggling with, but, you don't.  Instead you choose patience with a smile and watch them and encourage them and then it clicks and you all smile :-)

5.  Reading Aloud is FUN!
 I have always loved reading and was taught my love of reading from my momma who could devour a 300 page book in a few short days!  We try to read aloud frequently throughout the day... during school, before school, after lunch etc--->  It is actually a daily thing we've worked on throughout the year and over the year the boys have really come to enjoy the books and look forward to it.

6.  People are WAY more important than things.
They always were, but, now with once income you realize you really don't need all of the things that everyone else has to make you happy.

7.  I am more confident with choices I make for my family and not always following the easy smooth road that others follow.
We've always made choices along the way that do not always follow the norm:  Natural childbirth, baby wearing, breastfeeding, co-sleeping are a few of them, so, really homeschooling was really the next logical step in our journey :-)  I love the choices we make for our family and am proud of the love and prayers that surround them.

8.  Homeschooling is a 24/7, 365 days a year life embracing experience.
 This one is ongoing for me and each year I embrace it a little bit more and realize that my kids are ALWAYS learning, whether we are "doing school" or not.  In the beginning, I made "school" and we did "school" at certain times with certain things.  I would stress out if we were not able to do what was planned for the day too.  Over the years I have learned as much as the kids.  I know that learning is not just about sitting and paying attention at certain times during the day and that true education happens *all day long* and I LOVE that.  I cannot tell you how many times my face has lit up with the expression of how cool something is that just happened that was totally unplanned and happened to be a huge learning opportunity.  I love God-incidences!  See #3 about inviting the Holy Spirit into your homeschool.  He will come if you invite Him :-)

9.  This is the way that life is supposed to be, blessed by God as a family to be in harmony and at peace with each other and work as one to do His will.
Finding your rhythm is essential.  It takes time and patience on everyone's part, but, you will find it.  I am still finding ours, a little at a time.

10.  I love learning with my children and seeing EVERYTHING through their eyes and being SO blessed to witness all of the firsts and continuing firsts.  My heart just bursts with joy some days. I can say hands down that this is the most rewarding, most challenging thing I have ever done in my life.  It is a HUGE investment, but, the payment is even BIGGER and that makes my heart happy.  It is not just about learning the ABCs or 123s, but, helping to shape my boys into good people who will do God's will and for me that is WAY too important to simply hand over to someone else to accomplish.

So...Jenny  kindly took the time to make it even easier for anyone to memorize this scripture as she made some post-it notes that can be easily placed around your home {or office} to look at from time to time during your day.
